This pressure drop is basically due to the gate retraction into the bonnet.

It helps in either completely open the flow or to close the flow completely. A partial open gate valve poses a threat to the pipes. It can cause vibrations which could permanently damage the pipes. Even the sealing portion of the valve might get damaged due to the fluid friction if the valves are made to open in a partial manner. In all these valves, the basic aim is to block the flow completely or to allow the flow of water completely.
